The Durutti Column - The Return of the Durutti Column (1980)

Please find out for yourself why this is the greatest album made in the last 28 years. I state this not with arrogance but 28 years of reflection and comparison. Whilst Reilly didn't care much for Hannett's production (the finished sound was too thin) it pulled something from Reilly that hasn't been reproduced. Beginning is just superb. Sketch for Summer has taken off as a cover done by many, and picked up by far more finding something tight yet full of harmonic dissonance. Vini Reilly takes years to accept on his own terms. Voice in particular, but other aspects of his music as well. For that reason after 28 years it comes together on many, many occasions and the enjoyment ends up far richer listening to what Vini and Bruce Mitchell (and friends) do. What tells you how much quality there is here is that there is not one friend I know who comes up with the same half dozen let alone dozen tracks in consideration of Durutti Column's finest.
Find Rob Grey's Elegy, Conduct, Jazz, Guitar for Mother, Menina ao Piscina, Saudade to listen too and you'll find music ranging from 3 decades past to the present that sounds newer, fresher and far, far better than anything around now.
